Yay!
The Visualize workstation arrived today in perfect condition. W00t! Only problem is that the lowest that it can do is 1280x1024@75Hz (well I knew about this before, having learnt that HP boxes did incredible res several years back), and my moniter doesn't do that. Whoups. It's great to have a HP-UX box again ... being reacquainted with HP-UX which was one of the first genetic Unixes that I had physically access to felt great. Should hook it up to the serial console. But I've booted it and I know it works (because there is always X :1 -query)

Went hiking yesterday. Had great fun! Certainly one of the most enjoyable outings.

Another diversion ..... Woohoo! Got a ``new'' machine to play with. It is a dual cpu PII Dell PowerEdge. Best of all it was free, which was good since I was planning to pick up something at the tender to install NetBSD anyway. I'd pay for power, it's got a 700W PSU ... A diversion is both good news and bad news since I want to play around with my new toy, but I know fully that I don't have the time to do so but I'd do it anyway.

I installed NetBSD on it. Have to go to CVS to grab the source since the current release does not support SMP. When I turned it on it was pretty loud. My room is pretty noisy with everything turned on, it's got an eerie hum even at night.

My people should have read the awesome "IRC log" of how fedora and the community interact. But don't miss another "IRC log" of SCO and Linux.

是不是潮濕會導致 HDD 死呢？

家中的 Debian 昨天無任何先兆下，突然出現 "Input/Output Error"，還以為被人入侵。回家一看原來剛買不久的 WD 120G 8M Cache 已經在很努力在打 Band 中。壞 HDD 事小，無資料事大。

大家真的要多做備份啊！

圖像化瀏覽歷史

一班 Mac 愛好者開發了一個支援很有趣的追溯瀏覽歷史方式的瀏覽器，把用一個流程圖顯示
你的瀏覽歷史，每個網頁都用其縮圖代表。(SSL 的網頁可以用將縮圖糢糊化或用其他圖示取替) 應該很實用。可惜這瀏覽器只在 MacOS X 上運行。

CSS Template

由 Gregor J. Rothfuss 看到一個不錯的 CSS 網站， 收集不少 CSS Templates 。該站原只有德文版，現提供了英文版，不過那些 CSS Tempates 似乎還未移過 英文版，所以要拿 template 時要在 url 去刪去 en/ 。

由 Drupal 主站看到 Gnome Angalore ，有不少篇排似乎值得借鏡。

另外，亦由 Planet Apache 看到幾個人在為 gzip 、 bzip2 及 rzip 做表現測試。似乎 rzip 都是一個不錯的壓縮工具。

以上是今天在 Slashdot 看到 Debian Installer Beta 3 Usability Review 一文，其中一名用戶的比較 Debian Installer 及 Gentoo 時，幽了 Gentoo 一默。

其實如果大家有試過 Gentoo Stage 1 Install 的話，可能都會跟我一樣，對以上的說話發出會心微笑。不過, 其實 Gentoo 的速度也實在使人留下深刻印象。Linux 就是這樣好, 各 Distro 各有所長, 各有特色, 百家爭鳴。

來自 Adam Kessel's blog 的一則趣事。大概很多人都有留意早前 微軟視窗的源碼被漏的新聞。有位朋友就在那段期間啟動了一個 Linux 2.6.2 的 BitTorrent ，並一事慶起改了個名字叫 "Kernel source here" 。這個 torrent 被啟動後不到幾個小時就吸引到過六百個下載者。然而，第二天一清早，該位朋友就發現他的寬頻被其 ISP 截斷了。原因是微軟寄了封電郵給其 ISP 懷疑他非法散播"視窗"的源碼!?
