Take 3 years to produce a new release!!!!!

I have read some blogs as follows.
Does Debian go very far behind in technology update?
Branden Robinson 自從當上了 DPL (Debian Project Leader) 後，有不少人都認為保守派的他，會使 Debian 繼續失去支持的用戶。不過再細看他最近第一次發出來的報告來說，情況似乎又不至於太差。
其實，由幾年前開始接觸 RedHat，後來再用上 Debian，這幾年實在都覺得 Debian 的路是沒有走錯的，自己在不同的情況下都使用了 Debian，有公司的、私人的、朋友的。同時，亦影響了不少身邊的 Linux 用家使用及研究。它的 Package Management 的細緻度以及 Security Patch 的嚴謹度，再加上方便無比的 apt-get 系統，都是使人愛不惜手，用上了便停不了。
可惜的是，對上一次的 Stable 版本 Release 已經太久了。而新版本 Sarge 的 測試期實在長得可以，幾年的時間，實在可以發生太多事了。
沒有什麼想法，只是希望 Sarge 在今年夏天前，真的可以成為新穩定版本的 Debian。

What about the release of 19 April 2005?
There was a release last month 3.0 release 5.
Will the coming release at month end become 3.0 release 6?

3.0 is always woody
All 3.0 releases are just minor upgrades - not allowed to upgrade package to newer version unless the old version has big problem, e.g. policy violation, critical bugs.
Sarge will be version 3.1 and largely different from woody (3.0).

據我所知.. 這是Sarge第一次進入forzen狀態
而debian歷史中亦末試過有由frozen將次「解凍」再回到testing的先例 =)
應該真的會推出吧

我印像中有次 debian frozen 了也等了幾個月才 release 。
Debian 要兼顧的平台太多了，加上對 stable 這字的要求比其他 distros 來得認真，三年已算小。

IMHO it depends on how much changes are included in one release.
It is expected that there must be a great deal of changes between 3.0 and 3.1.

Because everytime Red Hat release a new version, either from itself or the Fedora, it breaks people's system.
Anyway, Sarge is the first release that has a testing stage. Of course you never see previous release unfrozen to test.

Most distros take the way of "always use new version, fix when broken". However Debian stable has to be stable - you nearly have no chance to upgrade to another version until current testing becomes next stable.
Given there are still 50 RC bugs in sarge, I am not optimisitic it can be released as scheduled.

It's always a nightmare to upgrade on redhat system. In fedora, it is ..
Don't lower the standard of "stable" by other products. Debian is famous for a real stable system. It's unstable version is even more stable then "stable" release of many products.
Besides, Fedora support only 1-2 architecture. Debian run in more then 10 platforms. Of course, I always think Debian should not take so serious on those low population platforms in order to speed up it' release cycles.
Release date
Eventually, 30 May 2005 is not the release date of Sarge.
It is a bit disappointed.
Different from commerical pro
Different from commerical product, Debian put stable on the top priority and won't released util they fix all release critical bug. That why Debian is famous as the most stable and secuity distros among GNU/Linux world. you should compare its release cycle
with the server grade distribution like RedHat Enterprise Linux and SuSE Linux Enterprise Server which always talk 1.5-2 years to release a new version. And Debian is well known
event stable then those product. Besides, Debian need to support more then 10 archs but most other distros support one 2-3 archs.
For desktop user, it is recommond to use the testing stream which you can reach many
cuting edge application but stable quality.
