I installed it with woody and 2.4 kernel before, and soon upgrade to sarge (still kernel 2.4). At that moment, nothing special happend.
When I update the system to kernel 2.6, something did happen. The SATA disk used to be recognized as "hda", but now as "sda" under kernel 2.6. So when I just upgraded the kernel, I couldn't succeed in booting the system since all recorders in /etc/fstab were still /dev/hdax not /dev/sdax, so I had to use rescure disk and login to modify it. Then everything is OK.
As you have seen, it's the kernel not the distribution, tells the difference. If you just want to install a fresh system, just use the installer programs, nothing needs to worry, neither woody or sarge (remember to choose the kernel 2.6 if you'll install sarge with d-i). If you update the kernel from 2.4 to 2.6, certain modifications are probably needed (or not, since the d-i is much better now).
build kernel with scsi/libata

Then you need a installer which has a kernel build with sata driver. Maybe sarge's latest installer. Woody definitely has no sata driver, too old.

Please read Documents/dm.txt
Please read Documents/dm.txt in the kernel source. And it's said that the software raid is better than the fake raid based on BIOS.
Can't find dm.txt in kernel-s
Can't find dm.txt in kernel-source-2.6.8. Where do you see it?
